Nicaragua has a proud art and especially literary history. Poetry is highly regarded here and such poets as Dario, Pallais, la Selva, Cortes, and the writers of the Vanguardia movement. The Solentiname Archipelago is famous for creating one of the most famous styles of Nicaraguan painting, which was primitivist as well as colorful, reflecting the tropical beauty and peasant life that was round them. Woodcarving is also famous in the area. Elsewhere in Nicaragua, weaving and pottery are popular forms of artistic expression. Mural painting is also widespread on public walls and buildings. Many tell a story, while others make a political statement.
